Short Stories 196 — Writing Prompt 29
As they rode away from their old life, they knew they’d never look back.
Harry and Sally a couple in their late thirties living in a very small town. For over 10 years they have stuck with each other. Caring for each other and fighting with each other. They were in their youth when they meet each other. They grew together. They dreamed together and similarly, their dreams died together.
Harry wanted to become a cop. But the lack of fitness and his poor eye-sight ultimately resulted in the death of his childhood dream. And Sally wanted to be a singer, but she was so bad at singing, that their neighbors regularly called cops, as she stands noises which she called singing. Both of them were bad at what they wanted to be and neither did they have the drive to improve.
Harry settled for a bank job that brings just enough money for them to live off while Sally keeps changing jobs from, a nurse, to a hair-dresser, to a part-time gardener. She is all over the place, just like JJ, his brother.
Every month they manage to scrape enough to stay afloat, but not enough to live their life. They had always and still feel as if they cannot do anything to spend their money as the majority of it is utilized in paying bills. And the new mayor in their town has made taxes compulsory. The amount is fairly normal but they feel as if they are paying a fortune.
The amount that they are making is not amazing, but it is enough for a family of two to live off and still save money. But Sally’s desire to stay with the trends that her friends follow and Harry’s excessive alcoholism is causing a dent in their purse and they are totally unaware of it.
Sally thinks that this is the only freedom she has left in this situation that brings her joy in life. And if she would stop these habits she will lose the only friends she has. Whereas on the other hand, Harry’s expensive taste for alcohol and urge to win a lottery, is sinking the majority of his earnings.
Luckily they spent only after paying all the bills. The electricity and the water bills are off the chart, as the mayor has very dumb and high-cost thresholds that are asked from the people to pay for. And these are expenses are highlight by both the husband and wife when it comes to savings. Pointing out that this is the worst thing about living in this town. And the other town members would also agree with them.
They often feel jealous when it comes to their neighbors as they regularly go on vacations while both of them are stuck in this shit house, with loans on the house as well as the car they drive. As more time passed both, husband and wife became more impatient and envious of others and their success. They became extremely mean and bitter towards others.
And the scale finally tilted when both of them went to their friend's house and their friends made a comment of how little they have achieved in life while all other friends are doing amazing. That ticked Harry off. He did not show any emotions and laughed at the sly comment but internally he was furious. The resentfulness inside him soon became revengefulness and he deiced to do something about it.
Harry started searching for ways to get out of this shithole. He wanted a way out and quick. For months and months, he tried to find a way to make quick money and lost more money in the process. He kept getting scammed in the same Ponzi schemes and lost a huge chunk of his money. And now he had a personal loan on top of his head. And there is no way he can bear the burden of it.
One day as he sat on the sofa watching television with his wife. And the characters in the show had a similar situation in the story and he deiced to become bad guys as being good wasn’t helping them. Harry was influenced by this particular idea. He related a little too much with the characters and he said out loud, “Hey Sally! Let’s rob a bank.”
At first, Sally wasn't in on the plan, but Harry convinced her with the plan. He decided to rob the bank that he had been working in. He not only knew in and out of the bank and the staff but also knew that there are at least a million dollars in the bank. And for the next few days, Harry peeled his eyes open and kept eye on everything in the bank, from what was going on, to can be manipulated to his advantage and the precautions that he has to keep so that they don’t get caught.
Soon the day came. It was time for them to execute the plan that Harry took months to prepare for. They both got on the bike and as they sat they knew they are not going to look back.
