Short Stories 205 — Writing Prompt 38
The curtain rose and the audience waited for the play to begin. They waited a long time.
Nowadays, plays are a rarety. And people that show up are even rarer. In today's time, even the world-renowned groups find it difficult to gather an audience that appreciates the craft. But this time the exact opposite has happened. A lot of tickets have been sold, more than expected.
The group expected to sell around 4oo — 500 hundred tickets in a venue of 1500, but all have been sold. And the audience is expected to arrive in half an hour. And to their surprise, the audience has started pouring in. And they seem to be way too excited about it.
The auditorium looked astonishing, drenched in colors red and golden. Both the colors were the favorite colors of the king that once ruled this land centuries ago, and yet to this day, these are the primary colors of the town. In fact, their flag is also draped in the same fashion. The main stage is massive compared to the entirety of the auditorium.
inside the auditorium, it is cooler compared to the outside. It should be because of the dimmed lights and the massive air conditioners and the cooling facility. The environment is something else inside. And people present inside are loving it. And one by one the crowd is coming through the main entrance.
As the auditorium started filling, the commotion had also risen. Two people fighting for the seat, to a group of youngers laughing amongst themselves. Rest trying to find their seats, and in the process yelling and shouting to get the attention of their companions. 15 minutes had passed and the auditorium was half full. The majority of the seats were occupied and the commotion had quite a little. But there were still people that coming in and there still will be people coming late even after the play has begun. That is how these shows go always.
It was time. The show will begin any second and the audience has calmed down. The majority of the people have settled in their red velvety cushioned seats. Waiting for the show to start any minute. And anticipation is starting to rise. Fifteen minutes have passed by now and the show should have already started by now. And the crowd being so intelligent, they assumed that maybe because of the few people that are still coming in, the show may be delayed because of that. And so they wait in patience.
By now 30 minutes have passed and by now all the seats are occupied. And the audience wonders when is the show exactly going to start. And they wait patiently.
Another 25 minutes passed. people were starting to get irritated a little by now. The pin-drop silence was starting to fade away as the murmurs within the crowd had begun a little louder and way too obvious. The show runners knew that any time, the crowd will start shouting if they aren’t addressed. And so an announcer was sent on the stage, in an attempt to by some more time.
“Hello, ladies and gentlemen. I am aware of the fact that you all are keenly waiting for the show to begin, but we are facing a little technical difficulty and I have come here to ask for a little bit more time. I am really sorry but the dealy, but it makes take another 15 to 20 minutes. Once again, I am really sorry.”
The announcement had calmed down the public a little. As they had a time frame for now. And so the murmurs quieted down into whispers and the game of patience began.
Meanwhile, the technical difficulty that the crew backstage was facing was taking even longer. It was more than a technical difficulty and they had no idea how are they going to rt4eslove it, all they were doing is stalling and hoping something happens and their issue is resolved.
The time frame had passed, that was promised to them. And the show hadn’t yet started. And most of the crowd was fuming. It is taking a lot of time and the crowd wasn’t happy with it. The group of youngest that were making the majority of the noise, in the beginning, had suddenly started making even more noise. They started chanting and the crowd soon joined them. But the chants were different, it wasn’t exactly chanting, they were actually singing.
And the crowd also joined and soon a chorus began where the entire crowd is singing in unison. The entire auditorium shook and danced as the crowd sang their patriotic song and made the backstage shake. And this went for a while, for more than 20 minutes and by now the show was an hour and a half late.
But by now, the majority of the people were tired of waiting and they got up from their seats and started walking towards the entrance. And a small group got up, slow people started getting up from their seats as they too prepared to move out.
As people reached the entrance the announcer came to the stage, “I want everyone to be sated as I want to let you know. I am once again sorry to tell you that there isn’t any show here. In fact, there wasn’t going to be a show. It was just a science experiment me and my colleagues had set up.”
